----------------------------------------------- HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT The UNITED STATES SUBMARINE VETERANS was started by a group of United States Submarine Veterans of World War II who shared a belief in the need of an organization open to all submariners, from the very beginning of the Submarine Service through to the present and into the future - not limited to just those who served so ably in the Second World War. That those lost on Submarines, in the line of duty for their Country, will never be forgotten. In Groton Connecticut, the "Submarine Capitol of the World", the above group started contacting past shipmates. Favorable responses came from Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and many more from Connecticut. After procedural meetings in the above states, a final meeting was held October 12, 1963 - BORN, the UNITED STATES SUBMARINE VETERANS with NATIONAL BYLAWS AND A NATION PURPOSE, an official CREED as follows: "TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF OUR SHIPMATES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTIES WHILE SERVING THEIR COUNTRY. THAT THEIR DEDICATION, DEEDS AND SUPREME SACRIFICE BE A CONSTANT SOURCE OF MOTIVATION TOWARD GREATER ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THAT WE PLEDGE LOYALTY AND PATRIOTISM TO THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT." Several months later, in 1964, the organization was officially chartered and incorporated in the State of Connecticut, with plank owners Warren Gannon, Angelo (the WOP) LaPelosa, Robert Link, Joseph Negri, Thomas Rowan, K.O. Walkington, et al. The first Chapter home was established in Groton, Connecticut, 40 School Street. On a vote by it's members, the home was declared the official "National Headquarters." To better establish communication and rapport, an organization magazine the "Submarine Nation Review" came into existence in 1969. In 1983 a National Scholarship program for the dependent sons and daughters of the membership was established. National Life Membership was inaugurated in 1984 at the National Business meeting in Groton, Connecticut. Base Life Membership, in 1985, was voted-in at the Boston Base available
with National Life membership as a prerequisite.
