March’s Minutes

  1. Meeting called to order at 1926 by Base Cdr. (Fred) Polgardy. The pledge of Allegiance was lead by Fred. The purpose of our organization was read by Fred, a moment of silence was observed for our departed shipmates and an opening prayer was read by the acting Chaplain.
  2. Roll call: Base Cdr., Vice Cdr., Sect., Treasurer, COB/PR and Storekeeper were all present. The Chaplain was absent. There were a total of sixteen shipmates present plus one guest, Ron Crownover.
  3. The minutes & Treasurer's report: A motion was made, seconded and carried to accept the minutes of the February meeting as published in the news letter. The Treasurer's report was read. A motion was made, seconded and carried to accept the Treasurer's report as read.
  4. Old Business: (1) D-2 meeting plans are on hold till about July per Shipmate Bob Moyle. (2) Memorial Day Parade, May 20, 2000 plans are in the works. Joe Shugar needs to know how many people and the number and type of vehicles will be in the parade. Adm. Cooper (a member of our base) will be the reviewing officer. Fred verified the status of the signs a few weeks ago and assured us that the new ones will be ready for the parade. (3) Centennial Stamps…On March 27 the USPO will be canceling the commemorative stamps at Groton, CT. Most of us received a brochure from a third party who will have these stamps and pictures available. The entire set with prints can be purchased for $151.00. Due to the availability of these stamps to everyone, the base news letter editor will NOT be getting any for the base or any other individual. The USPO will be canceling stamps at the Becuna in Phila. on April 11, 2000. (4) Nominations for ERD have to be in by April 15, 2000. Fred understands that Andy Sorby is not running. There being no nominations from the floor, we agreed in discussion to vote upon supporting whomever is nominated at a future meeting. (5) Memorial service at the Reading City Park will be held at noon on April 11, 2000. Plaques and a flag have been procured for the service. Those participating should meet at 1130 at our monument. (6) The Storekeeper presented information on the official USSVI hat (with no gold trim on the edges) and the availability of tee shirts and Sub Vet flags. Because of having to order a minimum of a dozen tee shirts, anyone interested in getting tee shirts can purchase them at the Sub-Vets WWII NE Region at Valley Forge Holiday Inn on May 18 - 20, 2000.
  5. New business: (1) Becuna is having a work weekend on April 6 & 7 (Thursday & Friday) and all are invited to help. If you plan to work, contact Walter Hicinbothem Jr. at 215-945-3750 to make arrangements for food. (2) A plug was put in for us to visit the www.ussarcherfish.com web site. (4) We are in the process of rewording our by-laws to conform to the format of National's. We will be publishing the new by-laws in the next news letter and will be voted upon at the next meeting.
  6. Communications: (1) Fred received a beautiful magazine from SubPac. (2) A letter from Shipmate Dan Cooper apologizing for not being able to attend our ceremony on April 11, 2000 due to other commitments. (3) The usual monthly news letters and VA calendar were available to anyone for their review.
  7. Good of the Organization: (no items)
