This double "F" is common on the colonial records as well as English for many, years beginning with this letter. His name is third on the list of proprietors who drew at the sixth division, Feb 4, 1707. From time to time he bought more land and drew with the other proprietors from the common land until he was a large owner of real estate. He married Mary Tyler and then Abigail Marsh, of Bellingham. The children of John and Mary Farnham are: Mary born Andover, married Nathan Penniman; Anna, born in Andover, died at the age of 3 months; John, born in Andover, married Mary Wood, daughter of Solomon and Mary Hazeltine Wood, Ann who married a Penniman and Moses. JOHN FARNHAM was born on 19 Apr 1756 in Dracut, Mdsx Co., MA.^626,1337 On 5 Dec 1777 he was Yeoman in Dublin, Cheshire Co., NH.¹³³⁸ [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: Removed to]¹³³⁹ He died before 1813 in Upper Canada.⁶²⁶ Date of death of John Farnam Sr. is unknown; however, in 1813 Archelaus K. Farnam, "Eldsest son and Heir at Law of the Late John Farnam," sold Lot 21, Consession 9, Bastard Township. Nothing in the Memorial at Brockville vobering the transaction indicated any interest held by a widow. John Farnham died before 1813, probably in Upper Canada, later Leeds
County, Ontario.
He married Hulda Kenney of Wilton, New Hampshire. At the time of
marriage he was "of
Dublin" (Vital records of New Hampshire), but it may be that he had
spent some time previously at Wilton, where so many of his relatives
were living.
As a young child John Farnam had no doubt accompanied his widowed
mother to Billerica between 1760 and 1763, but nothing more had been
learned about him until he appeared on the 1778 tax list at Dublin, NH
with his brother Joshua, both of whom have been described as coming
there from Dracut. At Dublin, on 5 Dec 1777, as John Farnam yoeman of
Dublin, he bought from Moses Adams one-half of lot 20, range 9. On 8
Dec 1778, as highest bidder, he bought 22 acres of the NW corner of
lot 20, range 8 (sic), which was being sold for taxes, having been
classified as abandoned. Immediately thereafter, for "nine shillings
lawful money" he sold to Eli Underwood of Dublin, "all the right,
title, and possission I havae or may claim to have' to 3 acres of lot
20 in the 8th range in Dublin, beginning at the northwest corner and
running south to the brook." Dated ahd acknowledged 28 Dec 1778.
Witnesses: Nathaniel Greenwood and Joseph Greenwood.
The latest he has been found in Dublin Land Records was on 31 May
1782, when for 100 pounds"lawful silver money' he sold the West
one-half of Lot 20, range 9, to Ephraim Curtis and Simeon Williams of
Dracut, Middlesex Co, MA, husbandmen. Witnessed by Zebulan Chandler
and Noah Vilas, Abuttors: Eli Greenwood, Joseph Mason, Noses Pratt. n
the same day, with the ssame witnesses, he sold to Simeon Williams
yoeman of Dracutt 10 acres of land in Slstead, Cheshire County, DNH.
dIt is noted that the NW corner of this land was the SE corner of land
of Noah Vilas.
So the family may have made the trip to Vermont between 1783 and
1786, settling inthe area claimed by both Salisbury and Leicester. The
1790 census for Salisbury, County Addison, Vermont, lists John Farnum,
with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 5 females. John Farnum of
Leicestter signed several petitions, bebinning in 1788, one by the
inhabitants of Leicester disputing the settlement line "giving to
Salisbury the Jurisdiction of the lands we settled upon to our great
injury." Finally, on Mar 3, 1795, John Farnam of Leicester, Addison
Co. Vermont, sold his 130 acres in "Leicester, Alias Salisbury," and
no doubt began the trek to Canada.
CRO in his notes makes the comment:"John apparently left the U.S. in
1796, and may havve been a Loyalist. At any rate, he associated with
them." But gives no speciffic instances and names. There were several
men by the name of John Farnam/Farnum/Varnum who participated in the
Revolutionary War onthe side of the colonies, but none can be
definately described as this particular one.
CRO seems to have some reason for thinking John Farnam had been at
Kingston in Upper Canada before setttling at Leeds County, but found
no evidence. His first appearance in the land records (microfilmed
land and state book for upper Canada, Public Archives at Ottawa) was
Feb 14, 1798, when at Bastardd Township, Leeds County, as John Farnam,
Lot 21, Range 9, he was "on the lot with his family." At the same time
adn place, Archelaus Farnum was "on the lot, " Lot 20, Range 8.
Patents for these properties were granted each of them by the Crown as
of May 17, 1802. John Farnam JR. soon appeared and thoroughly confused
things.
The three Farnams, John, John JR., and Archelaus, appeared at
intervals during the early years on Bastard Township tax and
assessment rolls (mostly for payment to send representatives ato the
Assembly) and on a few scattered census reports.
A list of inhabitants taken for the year 1806 in Bastard Township was
headed by John Farnum, followed by Archelaus, Mother Widow, Ruth, and
Lyman. Whose mother the wodow was is not clear. One interpretation is
that John Farnam JR. headed the household, which included his older
brother, his widowed mother Huldah, and a younger brother and sister.
On the other hand, it could have been John Farnam Sr., now a widower,
with three of his children still at home, plus his own mother. Note
that the Vermont 1790 census record includes 5 females, although the
fourth daughter was not born until 1791. It is also probable that John
JR. in assessment and tax rolls was in 1807; from then on, it was John
Farnam only.
Date of death of John Farnam Sr. is unknown; however, in 1813
Archelaus K. Farnam, Eldest son and heir at Law of the late John
Farnam, sold Lot 21, Concession 9, Bastard Township. Nothing in the
Memorial at Brockville covering the transaction indicated any interest

Leslie A. Farnham attended the district schools of Portland township, Chautauqua Co., N.Y., whither his parents removed from Minnesota, and his entire active career has been devoted to farming. At first his operations were conducted on farms which he rented, but in 1916 he became the owner of the farm which he is now living, which comprises ninety-two acres, fifty of which are under cultivation, five acres being planted with grapes, making a promising vineyard, the remainder being pasture and woodland. His stock consists of fine specimens of cows, hogs, horses and chickens. His church affiliation is with the Methodist Episcopal denomination, and his political allegiance is given to the Republican party.
Mr. Farnham married in Ripley, N.Y., Mar 18, 1912, Juva May Lanphere, daughter of Howard Vernon and Sarah Jane (Meeder) Lanphere. Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Farnham, as follows: Laurence Everett, born Nov 30, 1913; Thelma May, born April 19, 1916; Forest Edward and Norris Edwin, twins, born Aug 23, 1918; and Marie Agnes, born Mar 17, 1920. Children were: Laurence Evrett FARNHAM, Forrest Edward FARNHAM, Marie Agnes FARNHAM, Frances Irene FARNHAM, Stanley Gerald FARNHAM, Pearl Ione FARNHAM, Thelma May FARNHAM, Norris Edwin FARNHAM.
