He was living next door to his brother John. He was living on 12 Aug 1870 in Greenwood Township, Crawford County, Pennyslvania.¹⁵⁰⁰ According to the 1870 Census Benjamin was living with a woman named Harriet who was 49 years old. Also a young girl named Lovina Holcomb age 20 and a child named George Holcomb age 3 were living with him. He also had 3 of his own children living with him Gideon, Mary L. and Lewis (Louis). He died on 13 Mar 1890 in Greenwood Township, Crawford County, Pennyslvania.³²¹ Benjamin married (2) Harriett Hocum (?). She was born 1823 in PA. An 1866 deed indicates a possible third wife "Ruth" . The children were all born in Crawford County, PA. From the Genealogical and Personal History of Western PA (1915), this excerpt; "Benjamin .... purchased a farm in Greenwood Twp. He was very successful in its cultivation but sold it after his children grew up, and purchased a farm in the Eastern section of Greenwood Twp, in association with Parry Steadman (son-in-law) and lived there until his death. The demise took place 13 March 1890.
First, I have no Grinnell connection, and I can't tell you much about the
source of the Grinnell information. I do a lot of research - I answer
queries for the county genealogical society, and I spend a lot of time at
the historical society library. I was leafing through a file of
miscellaneous Grinnell material at that library and happened to notice the
birth listing. It is a single sheet of paper, handwritten, no source given.
In spite of that, I thought it might be of interest to researchers, so I
copied it. Sorry I can't tell you any more.

Austin's book, "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island" (l887), offers this chronology: 24 November 1636--bought land of Ralph Earle. 1657, Freeman (Daniel's BD of 1636 is likely derived from this date, as one normally had to be 2l to be a Freeman). 3l Mar 1658 he had a deed from James Weeden (his Stepfather) for six acres. l667-l669-1673 he was a juryman.. l674 he was a constable. l676- grandjury. 5 Apr l679 he sold six acres to Francis Brayton. 9 Nov l68l, he sold l3 acres to Abraham Anthony. 3l Dec l683 he and his wife, Mary, sold Henry Brightman 23 acres for l24 Pounds. l687, Little Compton he was there this early. 20 Jan l688 he deeded his son, Daniel Jr., south half of l3 lot in grand division. 5 Jan l694 he deeded his son, Richard, for love and etc the other half of the above lot containing 45 acres. 6 Jul l703 he deeded land and signed c ., to son Richard (being same that his son has deeded him the year before). Gideon^ GRINNELL was born in 1767 in Triverton, Rhode Island.³²¹ He died in 1826 in Greenwood Township, Crawford County, Pennyslvania.³²¹ Gideon came to Farmington in the 1790's. On Nov. 1, 1899 Gideon purchased "72 acres of land...part of lot 84", next to the property owned by his brother John, which has been recorded in March 1799. Gideon married Abigail reportedly of Farmington, but more likely of Lansboro, Mass., around 1790. It is stated that in the latter part of 1810, Gideon moved to Tioga Co., N.Y. but the above 72 Acres were deeded by Gideon "of Farmington" to Timothy ALLEN on the 15th day of Nov. 1813. Two of his younger sons, however Jacob (1810) Benjamin (1811) are shown as being born in Broome and Tioga Counties N.Y. Sometime later he moved again to Crawford Co., PA where perhaps his oldest son John C. had migrated. a record there shows Gideon GRINDLE (sic) died in 1826 in Greenwood Twp. Parents: Nathaniel^ GRINNELL Pvt. and Ruth^ CLARK.
