NATHAN STEADMAN, Corry, was born in Fallowfield, Crawford Co., Penn., July 6, 1831, is a son of James and Mary (Crane) Steadman, both deceased. Our subject learned his trade, blacksmithing in Crawford Co.; was united in marriage, Sept. 9, 1852, with Nancy M., daughter of Jeptha and Isabel (Ringland) Keen, deceased. Mr. Steadman and wife came to Erie Co. in 1852. Five children have been born to this union, viz., Levern J., Sarah A., Fred R., Clarence E. (deceased, aged four), Retta J. (died when sixteen months old). Mr. Steadman has been sexton some fifteen years, also Special Policeman four years. He and family are members of the M. E. Church, in which he has served in different offices -- leader some thirty years, has been licensed to exhort, and for nine years has been teacher and Assistant Sabbath School Superintendent. He owns a residence on Pike street, and four
acres of land on Pike and Centre streets. Mr. Steadman is a self-made man; is a Prohibitionist in politics, and a member of the A. O. U. W.

Stedman. _ Enoch Stedman, the first of the Island [Block Island] Stedmans, was born in South Kingston, R. I., in 1762, the son of James Stedman of that place. He married Hannah (Bull) Fenner and was the Elder of the New Shoreman Church. He was a soldier of the Revolution. His father James came to South Kingston from New London, Conn., and was the son of Thomas Stedman of that town. The New London Stedmans descend from Thomas Stedman who was a mariner of New London, and married, 6 Aug. 1668, Hannah, daughter of Robert Isbell.

Steadman, a grandson of Frank Steadman, a half brother to Rose Steadman, states that his Aunt Edith Archer said that Rose and Frank were brother and sister. Their father reportedly was put in prison for stealing a horse, just before Frank was born.The two children were raised by their mother. Edith Archer, at the time of this letter, was 90 years old but of reasonably sound mind. Edith Archer was born in 1906 so the letter must have been written in 1996.
