John Garner Steadman, son of James Steadman, was born in Tioga County, NY, in Nov, 1807, and died in October, 1883. He grew up in the state of NY, assisting his father in the pioneer work connected with the farm, and at the age of eighteen years came to Crawford Co, Pa., where he worked as a farm hand. Not long afterwards he married, and then rented a farm, which he cultivated for a time. In 1835, he was living in Tioga county, NY, but returned to Crawford county, where he located in East Fallowfield township. In 1843 he purchased a fifty acre farm there, this being heavily wooded land. In order to make the first payment for this land, he drove two steers through the town of Greenville, Pa., and sold them for fifteen dollars. He could only get five dollars in cash, the remainder being taken in the form of groceries and other commodities. He walked home, then to Meadville Pa., where he secured the deed for his property, paying the five dollars as security on it, and then walked back to his home. With the assistance of his sons he errected a log house, and commenced to clear the ground with a view to cultivation. This was done by cutting the timber, and burning it as was the fashion of that time. He lived on this place until within four years of his death, when he moved to a farm near Geneva, Pa., in Greenwood twp, and there spent the remainder of his life. He and his wife were active and devout members of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he was class leader for many years. Kuhn on 29 Jan 2001. Pvt. Nelson Steadman was one of the 101 men recruited from Crawford County in September of 1862 into Company H of the 145th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. During its first year this company buried the dead on the battlefield at Antietam, participated in the fifth wave to attack the sunken road at Fredericksburg and was crushed by the flanking attack of Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville. Most of the company was captured at Chancellorsville and were imprisoned at the Libby Prison in Richmond for a time. Only thirteen of the original 101 completed the hundred mile march from Fredericksburg to Gettysburg in June with temperatures of over 100 degrees, and stood roll call there on June 31, 1863. By so doing, these thirteen are honored by having their names listed on the 145th plaque on the Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg. My great grandfather was the First Sergeant of Company H. His son and daughter wrote his biography. You can see a summary that was published Saturday in the Fredericksburg, Virginia newspaper, below. You will find a more complete version at my web site. My purpose in contacting you is two fold. First, to let you know that your family has a hero who is justifiably honored at Gettysburg for all to see. Secondly, I am thinking of starting a web site honoring the men of this Regiment. There is no regimental history of this unit. The closest to that is the diary of its chaplain in I'm Surrounded by Methodists available through www.amazon.com. I will be in touch later.
