William BATEMAN Esquire immigrated in 1630 to MA.⁴⁹⁷ William Bateman, Esq., the earliest of his surname in Massachusetts, came over with Governor Winthrop in 1630. He appears as the "Mr. Bateman," who was Deputy to the General Court held for the Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, at the Deputies House in London, Sept 29, 1629. The Batemans of Massachusetts traced at that date their connection with the Suffolk family and used the Arms of that branch of the family.
For a time he was at Charleston where in 1638 he was granted land. Later he was of Concord in the same colony but removed to Fairfield, CT, with Rev. John Jones and most of his congregation in or about 1644, and there died in 1658, having had a grant of land in Fairfield in 1649. His will gave one-half of his estate to his son Thomas and the other half to his son-in-law, Henry Lyon. He died in 1658 in Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT.⁴⁹⁷
