Riley Dean WOODFORD238 was born on 1 Feb 1931 in Winfred, South Dakota. He died on 23 Apr 1985 in Portland, Oregon (Mult Co. Veterns Hospitol). My husband Riley attended the University of Oregon majoring in English, enlisted in the Air Force (hoping to be a pilot as he had obtained a private pilots license) but his vision for color did not meet their standards. He was placed in a special program as a language specialist. He attended school at the Presidio in San Francisco and became a Russian Specialist. In that capacity he was stationed first in Tripoli, North Africa then in Lansburgh, Germany. (this was of course in the 1950's). When he returned he minored in Russian at the U of O. He went to work of the Eugene Register Guard right out of College and tutored Russian on the side. I met him at the newspaper where I worked. He loved to write and published a few stories in Field and Stream and Gray's Sporting Journal. He was an avid fly fisherman and helped to found the McKenzie Fly Fishers and served as Secretary to the group. We sponsored a Conclave in Eugene and had lots of "big name" fly fishers, i.e., Ted Trueblood, Roderick Haig-Brown, Ed Zern, et al. It was an interesting life. Riley founded his own newspaper devoted to Sports titled "The Oregon Sportsman". It was not financially successful and he worked for several regional newspapers and the the State of Oregon as Assistant Director of Travel Information. A position he held when we parted. He moved to Los Angeles and worked as a set designer for Metro Golden Mayer. (He had fallen in love with a woman writer who's brother worked for MGM - Carol Kinon Easton). Carol was writing a book about Harry Golden when she and Riley were together. She had written a book on Stan Kenton previously. She had grown up in the Hollywood environment and knew all the players and felt at home there. Riley began to do a lot of painting and produced a lot of quite large canvasses which were marketed by an art dealer in Beverly Hills, CA. I have a number of his paintings. He did well for about 5 or 6 years then tired of California and longed for the environment of Oregon and returned here. He worked for a small newspaper in Eastern Oregon in LaGrande. Our oldest son had a scholorship to Eastern Oregon Univ., and moved in with his dad during that time. It was at the tail end of that time that Riley learned he had lung cancer (he was a Camel smoker). He went through all the treatments but eventually died at age 52. Our son Riley has a degree in Integrated Sciences but works for the Juneau Empire Newspaper (as Arts and Entertainment Reporter - he has a band too) and sonTod has a degree in engineering and works at Hewlett Packard in Corvallis. Our son Tod's wife died a year ago in July and he now lives next door to us and we care for his 5 year old daughter. He has a log cabin in Bend and a 100 acre place up in the mountains where he and his daugher go skiing.
