"FIRELIGHT seems to me a very modern love story," says Stephen Dillane.  "It's about the need for taking control of your life, following your instincts, your passions, and liberating yourself from the past.  Charles tries to free himself from father's influence.  He must disengage from what he perceives to be his heritage and take a chance to strike out on his own."

"Working with the actors was the most challenging part of the directing process," says Nicholson.  "They questioned me intensely about the emotions in my script.  I'd written a performance-centered story and they, thankfully, poured themselves into it.  It was very exciting and difficult because I had to let go of a lot of things in the process.  The tone of the story changed a great deal as Sophie and Stephen did the key scenes.  They created moments together that I didn't even realize were possible.  They've made the film much more electric in its quieter passages.  I could not have been more thrilled with the cast that I had."
