                           Strawberry Shortcake

   3      cups          flour
   3 1/4  teaspoons     baking powder
   1 1/4  cups          sugar -- divided
   1 1/4  teaspoons     salt
     1/2  cup           shortening
   1                    egg beaten
     2/3  cup           plus two tablespoons milk
   1      quart         strawberries
   1      pint          whipping cream
     1/2  teaspoon      vanilla
   1      tablespoon    butter

Sift together flour, baking powder, 2 tablespoons sugar and salt.  
Cut shortening into mixture until crumbly.  
Add egg and milk, stirring with fork to make a soft dough.  
Gather into a ball and knead about 20 times.  
Pat dough into a heavily greased 9 inch cake pan.  
Bake in a 450 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes.  
Toss strawberries with 1/2 to 1 cup sugar and place 
over warm shortcake.  
Whip cream and garnish shortcake.
